Association

The Myanmar Institute Association was founded on December 10, 2016. The aim is to network German-speaking academics and those interested in Myanmar and to promote exchange, transdisciplinary research and language teaching. Contacts and exchange with the international academic network and Myanmar academic institutions are to be maintained and expanded. The association acts internally and externally as a contact for Myanmar-specific issues.

An annual conference at changing locations is aimed at and enables the exchange. This activity sees itself in the tradition of the Wimya (Myanmar Science Forum) founded in 2012. This has evolved into an annual symposium since 2014, first held in Halle, in 2015 in Zurich, and in 2016 in Berlin. In 2017, the Interdisciplinary Myanmar Conference 2017 was organized in Bonn by the University of Bonn in cooperation with this association.

Subgroups

The Myanmar Study Group, founded in Berlin in 2014, became a subgroup of the Myanmar Institute with the establishment of the association. The Myanmar Researchers of the University of Zurich, another subgroup of the association meet weekly for exchange.
